The
Cotswolds extends from near Stratford-upon-Avon in the north to
Wotton-under-Edge in the South. The name 'Cotswold' has a cosy ring to
it, bringing to mind traditionally English images of cottages, lush
green fields, and rolling hills. It derives from the Saxon, meaning
wooded hollows hidden among gentle hills - still an accurate description
today.
The Cotswolds landscape and its buildings owe everything
to the underlying bedrock. Honey-coloured limestone characterises the
region's picturesque churches and cottages, including
Bourton-on-the-Water, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Bibury, Burford, and
Minchinhampton.
