The historic county of Gloucestershire contains some of the best walking country in southern England. In the east lie the rolling escarpments of the Cotswolds stretching into neighbouring Oxfordshire while to the west the deep woodland of the Forest of Dean drops down to the Wye Valley and the border with Wales, and through the heart of the county flows the wide and mighty Severn, one of England's great rivers.
