Connecting two iconic lakes, each with their
own full-length ferry services, one can simply cruise the lake passages
if desired. In its entirety the walking route engages with a fabulous
mix of natural and human ingredients - fields, woods, open pasture,
with a taster of wild fell too, as well as attractive communities.
Starting on the shores of Morecambe Bay at the railway
station of the Edwardian resort of Grange-over-Sands the route
crosses the little limestone hill of Hampsfell to visit Cartmel, famed
for its remarkable Priory, Sticky Toffee Pudding and National Hunt
Racecourse.
Quiet tracks lead north to Lakeside on Windermere, where
the first ferry may be boarded, or the wooded shores explored via
Claife Viewing Station and Wray Castle.
The journey then climbs
secretive Scandale and slips over the fell pass into Caiston Glen and
leads by Brothers Water to Patterdale and Glenridding.
The second dedicated lake cruise may be boarded here, or
Ullswater’s western shores enjoyed on foot via Aira Force to reach
Pooley Bridge.
Here field-paths accompany the outflowing River
Eamont, ending conveniently at Penrith railway station.
