Between Avebury in Wiltshire and Ivinghoe Beacon in
Buckinghamshire, it winds, undemandingly, for 87 miles along a trail of
two halves, with the Thames providing its midpoint.
The wide-open spaces
of the bare North Wessex Downs are rich in prehistoric treasures and
soul-cleansing views, while the Chilterns to the east are cosier, more
populated, more heavily wooded. Step out and back in time on this
classic ancient route.
