To the south of Radnorshire lies the Wye Valley, where a number of
reserves are visited. In the mid-section of Radnorshire there are
reserves including a waterfall gorge with nearby Victorian features,
upland moor and wetland, woodland and a common frequented by
ground-nesting birds.
The northern edge of the county leads to
Presteigne, where two ‘urban’ walks combine meadows, riverside and
woodlands. In the north and west is Beacon Hill Crown Estate, a
substantial area of open moorland.
The area around Rhayader includes a
working organic farm, further woodland, some within the Elan Valley
itself and areas of open hill land. Rhayader is the setting for the
second ‘urban’ walk which includes riverside walks, a churchyard with
rare plant and lichen species and a reserve that includes a bat tunnel.
