The author, Colin Speakman, has written around 50 books, many of them focused on walking and the Yorkshire Dales. He has been a Principal Officer of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a transport and tourism consultant, the Co-founder, now a Vice President, of the Yorkshire Dales Society, a Vice President of West Riding Ramblers and Chairman of the Dales Way Association, President of the YHA Northern Region and Vice Chairman of the Friends of DalesBus. In 1997 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Bradford for his literary and environmental work, and in 2007 became the first recipient of the Dalesman Rural Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
